James Brown was an American singer, songwriter, dancer, and record producer who became a central figure in 20th-century music. Born in 1933, he earned numerous epithets reflecting his cultural impact, including "Godfather of Soul" and "the Hardest-Working Man in Show Business." Brown pioneered funk music and shaped the development of soul, rhythm and blues, and other genres across his five-decade career. His influence extended beyond his lifetime; his recordings became foundational source material for hip-hop artists and producers. Brown received recognition as one of the first ten inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. He died in 2006.
