Della Reese was an American vocalist, performer, television personality, author and ordained minister who maintained an extensive career spanning nearly nine decades. Beginning in 1931, she built recognition as a recording artist working across blues, gospel, jazz and popular music genres, with several charting singles including a number-two hit in 1959. On television, she broke ground as the first Black woman to host her own talk program and gained widespread recognition for her role in the acclaimed CBS series Touched by an Angel. She remained active until her death in 2017 and was among the victims of the 2008 Universal fire.
