Louis Prima was an American trumpeter, singer, and bandleader born in 1910 who became a significant figure in twentieth-century popular music. Rooted in New Orleans jazz traditions, Prima's career spanned multiple decades and genres. In the late 1920s, he established a seven-piece New Orleans jazz ensemble, later transitioning to lead a swing combo during the 1930s and a big band in the 1940s. He played a notable role in bringing jump blues to mainstream audiences in the late 1940s and 1950s. Prima subsequently became a popular Las Vegas lounge performer, establishing himself as an entertainer in that venue beginning in the 1950s. He remained active until his death in 1978.
