The Marvelettes were an American girl group from Inkster, Michigan, active from 1960 to 1972. Formed by schoolmates including Gladys Horton, Katherine Anderson, and Georgeana Tillman, the lineup was completed when Wanda Young joined the group before their first record contract. As one of Motown Records' earliest successful acts, they achieved prominence in the early-to-mid 1960s. Their 1961 single "Please Mr. Postman" reached number one on the charts, marking a significant milestone as both the first chart-topper by an all-female vocal group and the first number-one hit for a Motown artist. The group's success helped establish the label as a major force in soul and R&B music.
