Alwin Lopez Jarreau was an American vocalist whose career spanned from 1940 to 2017. A master of multiple genres including soul, jazz, and pop, Jarreau achieved major commercial and critical success, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s. His 1981 album Breakin' Away became a landmark recording of the Los Angeles pop and R&B scene, charting on the Billboard 200 for two years and earning him a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 1982. Throughout his extensive career, Jarreau received ten Grammy Awards and nineteen additional nominations, establishing himself as a significant figure in smooth jazz and contemporary pop music.
