Percy Sledge was an American soul and rhythm & blues singer whose emotionally resonant vocal style defined the deep soul sound of the 1960s. Born in 1940, he achieved international recognition with his 1966 ballad "When a Man Loves a Woman," which topped both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts and earned gold certification from the RIAA. Throughout his career, Sledge drew from soul, gospel, and country influences, establishing himself as a cornerstone of Southern soul music.
