The Shirelles were an American girl group that originated in Passaic, New Jersey, consisting of schoolmates Shirley Owens, Doris Coley, Addie "Micki" Harris, and Beverly Lee. Active from 1958 to 1982, they became prominent figures in pop and soul music during the girl group era. The group was closely associated with the Brill Building songwriting tradition and performed across multiple genres including rhythm and blues, doo-wop, and pop. Their work helped define the sound of 1960s popular music and established them as influential contributors to the development of soul and R&B.
