Hank Ballard and the Midnighters

Hank Ballard & The Midnighters were an American rhythm and blues group that played a foundational role in early rock and roll. Active from 1952 to 2002, the ensemble, led by vocalist Hank Ballard, achieved prominence in the 1950s with novelty hits including "Work with Me, Annie" and its answer songs "Annie Had a Baby" and "Annie's Aunt Fannie." Ballard wrote and first recorded "The Twist," though Chubby Checker's cover version released the following year became the widely recognized hit. The group's influence on rock and roll was recognized with Ballard's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.
