Co-written by Iggy Pop and David Bowie in 1976, "China Girl" first appeared on Pop's solo debut album The Idiot in 1977. Bowie composed the music while Pop created lyrics through improvisation at the microphone, a collaborative approach used throughout the album. Released as a single in May 1977, the track failed to achieve commercial success on the charts.

The song explores unrequited romantic feelings toward an Asian girlfriend, with the narrator coming to understand that his Western cultural background is negatively influencing her. The composition was inspired by Pop's personal romantic involvement with a Vietnamese woman.
