David Bowie composed this song, which was initially recorded and released as a single by Mott the Hoople through Columbia Records in 1972. Bowie served as producer and offered the track to the band after they declined his alternative composition "Suffragette City." Bowie later recorded his own version. The song became a glam rock anthem, achieved critical acclaim and commercial success, and was subsequently ranked 166th on Rolling Stone's 2021 list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
