The "Alabama Song" was originally written in 1925 by Elisabeth Hauptmann with music composed by Franz Servatius Bruinier and Kurt Weill for Bertolt Brecht's 1927 theatrical work Mahagonny-Songspiel. Brecht later incorporated the song into his 1930 opera Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. The composition has subsequently been recorded by multiple artists, including the Doors and David Bowie.
