The song was composed by John Sebastian of the Lovin' Spoonful for a 1966 Francis Ford Coppola film soundtrack. It subsequently appeared on the Lovin' Spoonful's 1967 soundtrack album. Sebastian later performed the composition at the 1969 Woodstock music festival in White Lake, New York, where it was the fourth of five songs in his set.
