Bobby Sharp composed this song, which was initially recorded by Ray Charles in 1961 and subsequently by Trini Lopez in 1963, with numerous artists later covering it. Sharp sold the composition to Teddy Powell for fifty dollars, though Powell insisted on receiving half the songwriting credit. Sharp eventually reclaimed his rights to the song and successfully renewed the copyright through his publishing company, B. Sharp Music, in 1987.
