Robert Hazard originally wrote this song in 1979, but Cyndi Lauper's version became the famous rendition in 1983. Lauper modified some lyrics for her rendition and released it as her debut single through Portrait Records from her first solo album. The album arrived four days after the single. Her interpretation was widely recognized as a feminist anthem and featured an award-winning music video. The song has since been covered by numerous other musicians.
