"True Colors" was written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly and served as both the title track and first single from Cyndi Lauper's second studio album in 1986. Released in August 1986 by Epic Records, the song reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for two weeks, becoming Lauper's second and final chart-topper. It earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and the accompanying music video was directed by Patricia Birch.
