Simon & Garfunkel's first studio album emerged after the duo, previously known as Tom and Jerry, secured a record deal with Columbia Records in late 1963. Recorded during March 1964, the album was marketed with the tagline "exciting new sounds in the folk tradition" and represented their initial entry into folk rock. The production team included Tom Wilson and engineer Roy Halee.
