Paul Simon composed this folk rock track for Simon & Garfunkel. Their performance of it during a studio audition secured them a Columbia Records contract. The original acoustic rendition was captured in March 1964 at Columbia's New York recording facility as part of their debut album, which came out in October 1964 but achieved poor commercial results. A subsequently released electric version with additional layers topped the Billboard singles rankings.
