Tygers of Pan Tang are an English heavy metal band that emerged from Whitley Bay in 1978 as part of the new wave of British heavy metal movement. The group was initially active until 1987 before disbanding. Following a reformation in 1999, the band has continued recording and performing. Their name draws inspiration from Pan Tang, a fictional realm in Michael Moorcock's fantasy novel Elric of Melniboné, specifically referencing the archipelago's mystical inhabitants and their exotic tiger companions.
