X Japan is a Japanese rock band originating from Chiba, established in 1982 by drummer and keyboardist Yoshiki and vocalist Toshi. The group initially performed power and speed metal infused with symphonic arrangements before transitioning toward progressive compositions featuring prominent balladic passages. As one of the earliest Japanese bands to achieve widespread commercial recognition through an independent label, X Japan significantly influenced the development of visual kei, a Japanese musical and aesthetic movement drawing parallels to Western glam rock culture.
