Salt-N-Pepa is an American hip hop group formed in New York City in 1985, consisting of Salt, Pepa, and DJ Spinderella. Their 1986 debut album, Hot, Cool & Vicious, achieved major commercial success with over 1 million US copies sold, establishing them as the first female rap group to earn both gold and platinum certifications from the RIAA. The album's standout track, "Push It," initially released as a B-side in 1987, became a breakthrough hit, reaching the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100. Blending hip hop with pop rap, soul, and reggae influences, Salt-N-Pepa became pioneers of East Coast hip hop and helped shape the genre's mainstream appeal.
