King Crimson is an English progressive rock band that formed in London in 1968, founded by Robert Fripp, Michael Giles, Greg Lake, Ian McDonald, and Peter Sinfield. Throughout their extensive history, Fripp served as the group's guitarist and leader, remaining its only consistent member. The ensemble became known for drawing from diverse musical traditions—classical, jazz, folk, heavy metal, gamelan, blues, industrial, and experimental sounds—creating a distinctive eclectic approach. As pioneers of progressive rock in the early 1970s, King Crimson significantly influenced contemporaries including Yes and Genesis, and their innovative work continues to resonate with audiences and musicians across multiple genres. The band has cultivated a devoted cult following, particularly during the 21st century.
