Alton Nehemiah Ellis was a Jamaican singer-songwriter who played a foundational role in developing rocksteady music during the mid-20th century. Emerging as an artist in 1938, Ellis became recognized as one of the genre's primary architects, earning the informal designation of "Godfather of Rocksteady." His career spanned multiple musical styles, including ska, reggae, and pop, establishing him as a significant figure in Jamaican popular music. In 2006, Ellis received recognition for his contributions when he was inducted into the International Reggae And World Music Awards Hall Of Fame. He remained active in music until his death in 2008.
