Martha and the Vandellas were an American girl group that emerged from Detroit, Michigan, becoming one of Motown Records' most significant acts during the 1960s. Originally formed in 1957 by Annette Beard, Rosalind Ashford, and Gloria Williams, the ensemble gained its distinctive identity when Martha Reeves joined as lead vocalist following Williams's departure in 1962. Signed to Gordy Records, a Motown subsidiary, the group rose to prominence throughout the decade, helping define the Motown sound with their blend of rhythm and blues and soul music. The group remained active until 1972, leaving an enduring legacy in popular music history.
