Martha and the Vandellas were an American girl group based in Detroit, Michigan, who rose to prominence during the 1960s as one of Motown Records' most successful acts. Formed in 1957 by Annette Beard, Rosalind Ashford, and Gloria Williams, the ensemble underwent a pivotal shift when Martha Reeves joined and assumed lead vocal duties following Williams's departure in 1962. Recording through Gordy Records, a Motown subsidiary, the group became synonymous with the label's signature sound, blending rhythm and blues with accessible pop sensibilities. They remained active through 1972, leaving a lasting impact on soul and girl-group music.
