Wesley "Wes" Williams, known professionally as Maestro Fresh Wes, is a Canadian rapper, singer, record producer, actor, and author born in 1968. A pioneering figure in Canadian hip hop, he achieved mainstream success early in his career and is widely recognized as a foundational influence on the genre in Canada. His 1989 debut album Symphony in Effect became a landmark release, earning platinum certification and standing as the first such achievement by a Black Canadian artist. Williams has been honored with a 2023 induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and a 2024 Governor General's Performing Arts Award, both historic firsts for hip-hop artists in their respective contexts.
