Johnny Clegg and Savuka

Johnny Clegg and Savuka

Johnny Clegg & Savuka was a South African multi-racial band active from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s. Founded by Johnny Clegg following the dissolution of his previous group Juluka, the ensemble combined traditional Zulu musical traditions with Celtic and rock elements, creating music with broad cross-racial resonance. Performing in both English and Zulu, the group addressed social and political themes, particularly those surrounding apartheid. Their 1987 album Third World Child featured notable tracks including "Asimbonanga" and "Third World Child." The band's trajectory was marked by tragedy when percussionist Dudu Zulu died in 1992; the group later recorded "The Crossing" in his memory.
