Johnny Clegg and Savuka
Savuka was a South African band formed in 1986 by Johnny Clegg following the dissolution of his previous group Juluka. The ensemble combined Zulu musical traditions with Celtic and rock influences, creating a sound with broad cross-racial resonance during the apartheid era. Performing in both English and Zulu, Savuka addressed political themes through their lyrics, particularly the injustices of apartheid. Notable tracks include "Asimbonanga" and "Third World Child," the latter from their 1987 album of the same name. The band remained active until 1994. The loss of percussionist Dudu Zulu in 1992 prompted the composition of the commemorative song "The Crossing."
