Don Gibson, a country musician, wrote and composed this song, which appeared on his 1958 album. Gibson first recorded it in December 1957 for RCA Victor Records. The track was released in 1958 as the B-side to "Oh Lonesome Me" and became successful on country charts. By Gibson's death in 2003, over 700 artists had recorded versions, with Ray Charles's rendition becoming particularly notable by reaching the top of the Billboard Hot 100.
