Roy Orbison and Joe Melson co-wrote this song, which appeared on Orbison's third studio album bearing the same name in 1962. The track was released in 1961 and became a significant commercial success, reaching number two on the United States charts. The song later achieved additional popularity through a 1978 cover by Don McLean, whose rendition topped the United Kingdom charts in 1980. Orbison subsequently recorded a duet version with k.d. lang that also achieved chart success in Canada.
