Originally released on a small Philadelphia label around October 1957, it was subsequently acquired by ABC-Paramount and reissued in November. The track achieved significant commercial success, reaching number one on both Cash Box and Billboard charts in January and becoming one of 1958's best-selling singles. It also topped the R&B Best Sellers list and charted internationally, including three weeks at number one in Canada and a peak of number 3 in the UK.
