"Come Away Melinda" was written by Fred Hellerman and Fran Minkoff. Harry Belafonte released the first version in May 1963. The same year, The Big 3, a folk group that included Cass Elliot (who would later join The Mamas and Papas), recorded it for their debut album. The song subsequently became popular with numerous other artists.
