Country Joe and the Fish was an American psychedelic rock band that emerged from Berkeley, California in 1965, becoming a central force in the San Francisco music scene throughout the mid-to-late 1960s. Founded by Country Joe McDonald and Barry "The Fish" Melton, the group crafted politically conscious lyrics reflecting countercultural preoccupations with war, social liberation, and consciousness-expanding substances. Their signature sound blended psychedelic elements with electronic instrumentation, featuring inventive guitar work and heavily processed organ arrangements that proved instrumental in shaping the emerging acid rock genre. The band remained active until 1970.
