Country Joe and the Fish was an American rock band formed in Berkeley, California in 1965, becoming a prominent force in the San Francisco music scene during the mid-to-late 1960s. The group, led by founding members Country Joe McDonald and Barry "The Fish" Melton, blended psychedelic rock with electronic instrumentation, creating a distinctive sound characterized by inventive guitar work and distorted organ arrangements. Their songwriting engaged directly with counterculture themes including anti-war sentiment, free love, and drug experimentation. The band's experimental approach to acid rock proved influential in shaping the genre's development. Country Joe and the Fish remained active until 1970.
