Rod Stewart co-wrote this song with Martin Quittenton for his 1971 album Every Picture Tells a Story. It has become widely recognized as Stewart's signature song. Rolling Stone ranked it 130th among the 500 greatest songs of all time in 2004. The Mercury Records single was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2017.
