The song was composed by Bert Kalmar, Harry Ruby, and Oscar Hammerstein II. Originally, Kalmar and Ruby created a song titled "Moonlight on the Meadow" in 1935 for a Marx Brothers film, but it was ultimately not included in the final production. Hammerstein subsequently revised the lyrics, transforming it into "A Kiss to Build a Dream On," which Louis Armstrong later recorded.
