"The Sweetest Taboo" is a track from Sade's second studio album, Promise, released in 1985. It served as the lead single from that album in October 1985. The song achieved modest success on the UK Singles Chart, reaching number 31, but performed significantly better in America, where it climbed to number five on the Billboard Hot 100 by March 1986 and maintained a top-40 position for thirteen weeks. Additionally, it became the band's second consecutive chart-topper on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, following their previous hit "Smooth Operator."
