"Chestnut Mare" was written by Roger McGuinn and Jacques Levy in 1969 for an unproduced country rock musical called Gene Tryp. The Byrds released the song in September 1970 on their album (Untitled). When issued as a single, it reached number 121 on the Billboard chart and number 19 in the UK.
