Santana's debut studio album was released by Columbia Records in August 1969. The record featured instrumental compositions comprising more than half its content, created by a band that originally operated as a free-form jam ensemble. Following advice from manager Bill Graham, the band incorporated more structured songwriting to increase commercial appeal while preserving the improvisational character of their music.
