Santana's third studio album, released in September 1971 by Columbia Records, served as the final record by the band's original Woodstock-era lineup until their 2016 reunion. Often considered the group's commercial and artistic peak, it featured the debut of 16-year-old guitarist Neal Schon. The album's cover art derives from an Arthur Lidov painting that appeared in a 1963 LIFE magazine issue.
