"Alive" serves as the debut single for Pearl Jam, an American rock band. The track was released in July 1991, approximately seven weeks before the band's first studio album, Ten, which featured the song. Stone Gossard, the band's guitarist, composed the piece, which began as an instrumental work called "Dollar Short" included on a demo recording created to attract a vocalist. Eddie Vedder, who became the band's lead singer, received this demo and contributed lyrics to the finished track.

The song's lyrics depict a somewhat fictionalized portrayal of Vedder's personal experience learning that his assumed father was not his biological parent.
