Merle Travis composed this song inspired by coal mining conditions in Rosewood, Kentucky. He recorded it at a Hollywood studio in August 1946, with Cliffie Stone contributing bass guitar. Capitol Records released it in July 1947 as part of Travis's folk songs album. The track achieved gold record status.
