Hank Williams composed and recorded this song in 1952, which has since become recognized as one of country music's most significant standards. Williams created the song while traveling with his fiancée from Nashville to Shreveport, Louisiana, reportedly inspired to write it after referring to his first wife Audrey Sheppard as having a "cheatin' heart." He dictated the lyrics to Billie Jean Jones shortly thereafter. The recording took place at Castle Studio in Nashville during what would be Williams's final session there.
