"Parallel Universe" originated from the Red Hot Chili Peppers' 1999 album Californication and was distributed as a radio promotional single in 2001, serving as the album's sixth and final single. Despite not receiving a physical CD release, the track achieved chart success, reaching number 37 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart during mid-March 2001, and was subsequently included on the band's Greatest Hits compilation.
