This was the debut studio album by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, released through EMI America and Enigma Records. Andy Gill, guitarist from Gang of Four, served as producer. The album notably featured Jack Sherman on guitar as a temporary replacement for founding member Hillel Slovak. The lineup also included founding vocalists Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea, along with drummer Cliff Martinez.
