The Smashing Pumpkins are an American alternative rock band established in Chicago in 1988. Founded by lead vocalist and guitarist Billy Corgan alongside guitarist James Iha, bassist D'arcy Wretzky, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, the group developed a distinctive sound characterized by intricate, multi-layered arrangements. Throughout their evolution, they incorporated influences ranging from gothic and heavy metal to grunge, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, shoegaze, dream pop, and electronic music. Following a reunion in 2006, the band has experienced various membership shifts, though Corgan has remained the central creative force and only founding member in the current lineup, which includes Iha and Chamberlin.
