Paul Simon composed this song, which first appeared as the opening track on his solo album released in the United Kingdom in August 1965. Simon and Garfunkel subsequently re-recorded the track in December 1965 for inclusion as the final song on their album Sounds of Silence, released in January 1966. The song was issued as a single in 1966 and later served as the B-side for a 1971 reissue of another track.
