"California Waiting" served as the third single from Kings of Leon's debut album Youth & Young Manhood. An earlier version of the track appeared on their EP Holy Roller Novocaine, recorded under time constraints. The band was dissatisfied with this initial recording, so they created a new version for their full-length debut album. Lead singer Caleb Followill later reflected that the band intentionally altered the song's style toward punk rock on the album version, suggesting the EP iteration was superior.
