"Breathless" was composed by Otis Blackwell and became Jerry Lee Lewis's fourth recording. Released in February 1958 on Sun Records, the song achieved significant commercial success, spending 15 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and reaching number seven in April 1958. It also charted on country and R&B charts, and reached number eight in the UK. The B-side "Down the Line" also charted that year.
