Lynyrd Skynyrd is an American rock band originating from Jacksonville, Florida, formed in 1964. The group initially performed under different names at small venues before adopting their distinctive name in 1968. Led by vocalist Ronnie Van Zant and featuring guitarists Gary Rossington and Allen Collins, the band achieved major success during the 1970s as pioneers of Southern rock. Their commercially popular tracks, including "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird," helped establish the genre nationally. The band's trajectory was cut short on October 20, 1977, when their chartered aircraft crashed, resulting in the deaths of Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and backup vocalist Cassie Gaines, and causing severe injuries to remaining members.
