Louis Armstrong was an American jazz and blues trumpeter and vocalist who became one of the most transformative figures in jazz history. Active from 1904 to 1971, Armstrong's five-decade career encompassed multiple eras of the genre, establishing him as a foundational influence across jazz, swing, and popular music. Known by nicknames including "Satchmo" and "Pops," he earned widespread recognition including a Grammy Award for Best Male Vocal Performance in 1965 and posthumous induction into the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1972. His legacy extends beyond jazz, with recognition from the DownBeat Jazz Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame.
